Just 25 miles outside of Toronto, Milton Ontario is Canada’s fastest growing community. When the young Taylor couple bought an 8-year-old house right across from a park and elementary school, they knew this would be the perfect place to start their family. With a new arrival on the way, the Taylors began work on the upstairs nursery. They contacted a local HVAC company to help them solve a major home comfort issue. No matter how high they turned up the furnace, they were unable to adequately heat the upstairs – particularly the soon-to-be nursery. They thought that perhaps the windows were leaking or the walls required more insulation. Maybe the furnace simply wasn’t powerful enough to do the job.

It didn’t take long for the HVAC pros at Atlas Care Heating & Cooling to diagnose the problem – leaky ducts. They also knew the best solution – Aeroseal. A test of the home’s ductwork found the system was losing 464 CFM of treated air – about 40% of what their high-efficiency furnace was producing. It took less than an hour for Aeroseal to seal 90% of the leaks from the inside of the ductwork, reducing total leakage down to 29 CFM. Now, all rooms in the Taylor house are comfortable year round.

Not only did the duct sealing totally solve the problems we were having getting heat and air conditioned air to the upstairs rooms, but it allowed us to turn the thermostat way down. You can hear the furnace kick on and off and it’s now off much more than it used to be. I’m sure this is going to have a huge impact on our energy bills.

This home was certainly not an exception. Most of the homes we test – even new constructions – are loosing 25 to 30 percent of their treated air through leaks in the ductwork. You could see that the exposed ductwork was originally taped around the seams but that just isn’t enough - and that doesn’t even take into account all the ductwork behind the walls and running throughout the house that you can’t easily access.

The home had a 60,000 BTU high efficiency furnace and a 2 ton SEER air conditioning system. Both were new and certainly sized properly to easily handle the entire 1,100 square foot home. It simply doesn’t make sense for homeowners to spend the extra money on high efficiency equipment if it can’t deliver the performance because of leaks in the ductwork.
